The Montgomery YMCA was founded in 1868. Community leaders had a vision to offer young men an alternative to the vices of the day. A lot has changed in the past 139 years. The YMCA now includes everyone, but the central essence of the YMCA, however, remains unchanged.
Today's YMCA reaches out to over 65,000 people in 18 branches covering 6 counties in Central Alabama. Our YMCA is recognized as a "laboratory" for new innovative programs. Under the direction of a strong and dedicated Board of Directors, our volunteers and staff will continue to work to make a difference in Montgomery.
We still exist today, dedicated to the development of character - Caring, Honesty, Responsibility and Respect. Throughout its long history, YMCA Montgomery has been serving the people of Montgomery through programs that build character and develop skills.

- Run errands without using the car—go to the bank, video store, dry cleaner or convenience store on foot
- Make a morning or evening walk a regular part of your family’s routine
Spend more leisure time with your family being active—play tag, basketball, soccer or ride bikes
- Along with your other weekly activities, write down times for physical activity and post a schedule for the family
- Make several trips up and down the stairs to do laundry or other household chores
Take your dog for a walk
- Walk to your place of worship for services
- Focus on walking distance over speed. It’s better to get in more steps at a comfortable pace than to burn out quickly
- Walk on a treadmill on rainy days or when it’s too dark to walk outside
- Benefit a good cause by joining a charity walk
...Eat healthier
- Stock your cupboards with convenient low-calorie snacks like pretzels, rice cakes, low-fat popcorn and graham crackers
- Pre-wash mini carrots, celery, grapes and apples for quick snacks
- Satisfy chocolate cravings with low-fat pudding cups or frozen fudge bars
- Substitute ground turkey for beef. It decreases the calories, fat and cholesterol of burgers or pasta dishes without sacrificing taste
- Omit or use half the amount of butter, margarine or oil called for in macaroni and cheese, rice, pasta and stuffing, and reduce the amount of cheese in casseroles and appetizers
- Satisfy your family’s sweet tooth with a sliver, bite, or taste of dessert or, cut a half slice of cake or pie
- Pay attention to serving sizes, particularly with juices and sodas. Some cans and bottles contain 2 or more servings
- Quench your thirst with bottled water or diet iced tea instead of soda from the vending machine
- Lighten up your favorite coffee drink by requesting non-fat milk and using half the sugar or flavored syrup
- Control your snack portions by pouring an individual serving of pretzels or chips into a bowl instead of eating from the bag

I Hope You Dance
“One final word, friends. We ask– urge is more like it – that you keep on doing what we told you to do to please God, not in a dogged religious plod, but in a living, spirited dance.” I Thessalonians 4:1
“Dance” brings up all kinds of thoughts in peoples minds. For me, it wasn’t a fun experience. Maybe because I was so bad at it, 3 left feet and I only have two feet! I had no coordination, no “light on my feet feeling.” Oh, I did in high school some, because I was “supposed to”. But when I got to be an “adult” there were several things I stopped doing because I didn’t like it. One was dancing. Consequently, I’ve probably missed out on lots of fun, all because, at some point I decided I didn’t like it. Dance for many people is an expression of joy, delight and fun. That is the way God intended for our lives to be - lived to the fullest! I think God’s plan for us isn’t to just plod through life, dragging along but rather live our life in service to Him, for others just like we were in a lively dance, not missing out on the best He has for us because we decided to just sit around.
I especially like the song, “I Hope You Dance” recorded by Lee Ann Womack, because it so clearly points to the joy that can come by dancing to life. I also like it because it was written by a friend and former YMCA Youth in Government officer in Tennessee when I was there, Tia Sillers. It reflects her personality and sense of awe at life.
So when you have the chance, dance, revel in life and be excited about all God has in store for you.
